This past April, a group of us left Toronto on a mission trip to Southfield, St. Elizabeth. Our first eight days on the island was extremely busy, and so the pictures in this report are of the two days we had to ourselves, plus some from the week I spent in Kingston. On the morning of the trip, I was extremely tired. I had end of semester exams the previous night and so didn’t finished packing until about 3:00 a.m. When my ride came at 6:30, I was looking forward to a nap on the plane, but of course, I came face to face with Murphy’s Law.
As July is the main holiday month in Sweden and factorys are more or less closed for some weeks, we decided to go somewhere for birding and our choise was Jamaica and Cuba. We knew that there would be no migrants or wintering birds and birdwatching would probably be rather slow and this turned out to be right. However, both islands bosts 25-30 endemics each plus a number of Carribean endemics and those birds were our main target. July is definately not the best time for birding in the Carribean because the heat and the end of the breeding season with very low songactivety and no other birds than the resident ones to look at.

Landed at Montego Bay at 2pm. The airport is set in marshy habitat with a few pools producing the first few birds. Skipped queue at Immigration as we noticed a new “line” being opened. Straight through Customs and on to Island Cars who were expecting us. A few false starts in the car whilst getting used to no clutch ! Drove to Westgate Shopping Centre via the coastal route missing out the worst of Montego Bay stocking up on a few provisions and checked directions to Orange River Lodge. Found lodge without difficulty with the road inland to the lodge being in better condition than anticipated. Booked in at a cost of £18 per night.

August is not the best time to visit. It is hot, the breeding season is largely over with birds obviously moulting and not very tape responsive. The North American migrants have left. You also run the risk of hurricanes. Indeed hurricane Dean hit just 1 week after we left. Balanced against that Antillean Nighthawks are in and easy to see and actually the important birds are all available.
